Another new race of spinach downy mildew (Peronspera farinosa ) has been named. Pfs13, previously known as isolate UA0510C was first seen in California in January 2010, documented in Spain and Italy late last year and after careful analysis, identified as a new race Pfs13 by IWGP. Naming of a new spinach downy mildew race is a worldwide process by the IWGP (International Working Group on Peronspera farinosa) which is composed of spinach breeding companies, University of California, University of Arkansas, and other industry related companies; the isolate must appear a number of years, in multiple countries, and infect industry standard hybrids. Pfs13 is the third new downy mildew race to be identified in recent years and represents a major challenge to both growers and breeders.
